Automotive Maintenance Tips

·        Engine oil and filter

·        The engine oil and filter should be replaced at your manufactures recommended interval

·        Oil performs many critical tasks and it undergoes thermal breakdown due to the high operating temperatures inside your engine.  When this occurs it will become less effective as a lubricant.

·        Oil contains additives which have the ability to neutralize acids.  Over time these additives lose their effectiveness.

·        Oil can absorb water, dust and combustion byproducts and also hold them in suspension.  Eventually the oil gets saturated with this stuff and can not absorb any more. Then those impurities remain in the engine and can cause corrosion.

·        You can check your oil and ensure you are at the correct level by using the dipstick.  A dipstick will typically have markings at the end which will let you know if you are full or in need of oil.

·        The oil filter is a crucial element since it helps to remove damaging dirt and grit from oil, enabling it to clean, cool, seal and lubricate the engine more effectively

·        Engine air filter

·        It is recommended you check and replace your engine air filter regularly

·        The filter is responsible for stopping debris – dust, bugs, leaves prior to them entering your engine and possibly causing damage

·        Replacing the engine air filter will allow your engine to obtain the correct amount of air so the engine will run properly – maintaining the correct fuel to air ratio – important for the best efficiency

·        The typical air filter is made of paper is usually white in color.  If the filter is dark or has significant debris caught in the media it should be replaced

·        The replacement interval is listed in your owner’s manual or as needed by visual inspection

·        There are performance options available – ask us for recommendations and prices for your application

·        Tire Rotation

·        Your tires should be rotated regularly to increase the useful service life

·        Front tires typically have different demands than rear tires and rotating them will allow even wear across all of your tires to ensure they last as long as possible.

·        Rotations are typically performed every 3,000 to 5,000 miles and involve removing each tire and moving it to a different location on the vehicle.

§         Typical rotations are going to be one of the following:

·        front to rear for vehicles with directional tires

·        front to rear and side to side for standard tires

·        Tire Pressure

·        You should regularly check your tire pressure to ensure they are set to the recommended pressure by your vehicle manufacturer

·        New vehicles may have a Tire Pressure Monitoring System – sometimes abbreviated to TPMS.  This system adds a sensor to each wheel which broadcasts the pressure number to the vehicle.  If the pressure is low it will trigger either a message to display on your dash or maybe a warning light to illuminate.

·        Your recommended air pressure settings are most likely going to be found on the manufacturers label on the door jamb or sometimes on the inside of your gas lid.
